‍Please join us for the Michigan premiere of When The Rabbis Came To Town at‍ Muskegon's First Congregational Church UCC.

This stage play tells the story of Rabbi Allen Secher’s 70-year battle across America against anti-semitism and for Civil Rights. On June 18, 1964 he was arrested with 15 other rabbis during a prayer service aimed at desegregating St. Augustine Florida’s Monson Motor Lodge.

National publicity about this protest, the largest arrest of rabbis in American history, led to immediate Senate passage of the long delayed Civil Rights Act. While they were incarcerated the rabbis wrote a memorable call for social action, Why We Went. Former UN Ambassador Andrew Young has favorably compared this inspiring letter to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s letter from the Birmingham jail.

Portrayed by acclaimed actor Adam Bell, Secher, 91, takes the stage following the show for an audience discussion on the future of the Civil Rights Act now under assault in Congress and the courts. The play, staged before sold out audiences in Florida, Illinois and Wisconsin, was written by Roger Rapoport and Leslye Witt. When The Rabbis Came To Town is directed by Diane Van Wesep.
